In 1829, Juan Francisco Reyes’s grandson, Ysidro Reyes, planted 17 acres of Mission grape vines in the Pueblo de Los Angeles.  As a result, California Cabernet wines were created. For California Cabernet wine, this was a significant win. In fact, all of the missions grew this grape for the purpose of producing sacramental wine; however, after the fermentation process was finished, the Puebloans began to enjoy drinking wine. The grapes were placed in a cowhide and hung loosely between four trees or posts during the fermentation process. The fortified wine known as Angelica was a popular drink in Los Angeles in its early years of existence. Although it is unknown whether Reyes was the first commercial winemaker in Los Angeles, it appears that his winemaking business was all that he used to provide for his family. In 1831, Reyes had the good fortune to become neighbors with the newly arrived French cooper and distiller Jean-Louis Vignes. Vignes would become a mentor for Reyes throughout his life.
