Rum’s story as told by the Spirits of Pawling.  The most fascinating aspect of drinking is frequently the story behind a spirit. You not only get to enjoy a delicious beverage, but you also get to learn about the culture of a people and sometimes even an era while being transported through time. It’s a fun and upbeat tale at times. Sometimes it has a gloomy quality to it. One of the most well-known rum cocktails, the Dark ‘N Stormy (delicious, by the way—maybe go make one now as you sit down to read all about the history of rum!) may not be a coincidence. Rum’s history isn’t pretty or easy, but it is important to the history of the world. I’m not sure how New England would have fared without rum, or what their primary currency for trade and exports would have been to really get them started in the New World.
