The mysterious history of Tequila, explained by the Spirits of Pawling. Tequila’s definition remains a mystery. It is said to come from an old Nahuatl phrase. The area’s original inhabitants were the Nahuatl. Depending on the authority, the word means “the place where plants are harvested,” “the place where they cut,” “the place of work,” or even “the place of tricks.” Tequila is derived from the Nahuatl words tequitl (work, duty, job, or task) and tlan (place), according to Jose Maria Muria. It means “the rock that cuts,” according to other sources. Tequila Cascahuin asserts that the volcano resembled a petite woman’s breast, so the term is a corruption of “tetilla.” According to other sources, it is a mistranslation of the natives’ names, Ticuilas or Tiquilos.
